Breed of the day: Calico!
Also called Tortoiseshells
Also called Tortoiseshells
Most calicos are female. Did you know that? And, of course, there is a scientific explanation. Here I go. (I'll try not to bore you. xD)
Okay, like most female animals, female cats have two X chromosomes (represented by XX). The X chromosome is responsible for both the black and the orange color. The white color is another gene.
Males though have and X chromosome, and a Y chromosome (represented by XY). So that means that the male can have either black or orange. So, since females have two X chromosomes, they can have black AND orange, as well as some white. Whereas male cats have either black OR orange, and some white. So, there are more female then male calicos. There are some cases where a male cat has had XXY chromosomes, and then that's when you get a male calico.
I hope I didn't bore you or anything. I got that all of this webpage, so you can go there if you are confused. That's just how I learned it! xD
Also, calico cats are thought of as good luck. Japaneses sailors used to carry them on their ships to protect them from the sea. They are also popular pets due to their striking color pattern. In the United States, they are known as money cats!
Also, there are dilute calicos. They are kind of like faded calicos!

And, like all other kittens, calico kittens are just ADORABLE!!!
All in all, calicos are just great cats!
